Stock Screening Tools That Go Beyond Price and Volume

Guerilla Finance · Updated August 2026

Traditional stock screeners filter by price, volume, market cap, and technical patterns. For event-driven traders in the small and micro-cap space, those dimensions are table stakes — everyone has them. The screens that create an actual edge filter by dilution risk, upcoming catalysts, government contract activity, supply chain exposure, and institutional positioning before any of those signals are priced in.

The limits of conventional screening

A stock screener that shows you "market cap under $500M, volume above 500K, RSI between 30 and 50" gives you a list that thousands of other traders are looking at simultaneously. The screen might find interesting stocks, but the information advantage is zero — you're seeing the same list as everyone else running the same filter.

The screens worth running for small-cap event-driven traders are the ones that require proprietary data that can't be downloaded from a standard financial data vendor:

Dilution screening: finding structurally clean names

One of the most powerful screens for small-cap long positions is the inverse dilution screen — finding companies that have zero shelf registration, no ATM agreement, no convertible note overhang, and no outstanding warrants trading in-the-money. These are the structurally clean names where a positive catalyst can create a sustained move because there's no dilutive selling pressure waiting to absorb the rally.

Inversely, before entering any long position in a micro-cap stock, screening for dilution risk tells you whether your thesis can work even if you're right on the catalyst. Being right on the PDUFA date means nothing if the company files a $50M ATM offering into your rally.

Dilution Risk

DilutionWatch — Dilution Risk Screener

DilutionWatch's screener allows filtering across thousands of micro and small-cap companies by dilution risk score, active shelf registration status, ATM program activity, convertible note structure, and warrant overhang. Find structurally clean setups for long positions, or screen for the highest-dilution-risk names to identify potential shorts or names to avoid.

Biotech catalyst screening

The highest-return screens in biotech are forward-looking catalyst screens. Finding companies with a PDUFA date 30–60 days out that the market hasn't yet priced in (identifiable by low implied volatility relative to catalyst magnitude) is the fundamental biotech event-driven screen. Layering financial health filters (cash runway, burn rate, dilution risk) eliminates the companies that can't survive a negative outcome.

Biotech Catalysts

BiotechSigns — Forward Catalyst Screener

Screen biotech companies by upcoming catalyst type (PDUFA, Phase 3 readout, advisory committee), time to catalyst, proprietary outcome probability score, cash runway estimate, and dilution risk. Find the catalyst setups that are still below the market's attention threshold — before the implied volatility premium prices in.

Supply chain exposure screens

Some of the most actionable small-cap screens involve supply chain relationship mapping. When a large-cap company announces a major capacity expansion or beats earnings significantly, their key suppliers — often small-cap companies — see direct revenue upside. The companies that win supply chain screen opportunities aren't obvious from price data; they're revealed by parsing SEC filings and material agreement disclosures.

ChainSifter — Supply Chain Relationship Screener

ChainSifter maps supplier-customer relationships from SEC filings and allows screening by customer concentration, key supplier exposure, and material agreement activity. Identify which small-cap stocks are levered to specific large-cap earnings events through hidden supply chain relationships — the screen that exists nowhere else.
